In 1956, the Soviets crushed the Hungarians. Ike protested.
In 1961, the Soviets built the Berlin Wall. JFK protested.
In 1981, the Soviets attacked Solidarity. Reagan protested.
In 1990, Saddam invaded Kuwait. Bush 41 protested.
In 2007, Burma cracked down on pro-democracy activists. Bush 43 protested.
In 2009, Iran cracks down on protesters. Obama hides in Cheney's undisclosed location.
The president's job is to speak out forcefully in these situations. His initial caution was justified. Things have changed. Events now dictate the President come out of hiding. However, that is not his style. While in the Illinois State Senate, he voted "present" on controversial issues. When the economy melted down last September, he disappeared. When pirates took an American hostage, he hid. Obama's m.o. is to hide until events clear and then come out and speak. Now, Obama's tepid response can be interpreted as support for the Iranian regime. If the protests fail to evoke change, Obama will share some of the blame.
